How to care for your diamond

Caring for and cleaning your diamonds:

Don't wear your diamonds when you are playing sports or doing rough work. Bleach can discolour your mounting, so avoid contact. Don't put all your pieces together in one jewellery bag, diamonds scratch each other so rather keep them in small zip lock bags or tissue paper. See your jeweller every now and again to check your jewellery for loose prongs so that you do not lose any diamonds.

Cleaning your diamonds:

Lotions, powders soaps and natural skin oils put a film on diamonds making them look dirty. There are four ways to clean your diamonds.

  1. Detergent bath:
  2. Brush pieces with soft toothbrush in a bowl of luke warm suds using mild liquid detergent such as sunlight dishwasher and rinse under running water.
  3. Cold Water soak:
  4. Mix half and half cold water and household ammonia in a bowl. Brush with old soft toothbrush and swish in solution once more. Rinse and dry.
  5. Quick dip method:
  6. Buy brand name liquid jewellery cleaner and follow instructions. Note: This may be harmful to semi precious stones.
  7. Ultrasonic cleaner:
  8. This is a small machine which emits a high frequency turbulence thus cleaning the diamond. Note: This can cause very small diamonds to pop out of their settings.
